After graduating from East Carolina University in 2001, I began my journey in counseling as a geriatric social worker. I worked with the elderly and their families as a social worker and Executive Director with local Senior Living Communities.
Wanting to further my education, I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Master of Social Work from North Carolina Central University in 2016. I currently hold clinical licensure in North Carolina and South Carolina. I began working to stabilize family systems in their homes throughout 5 counties in central North Carolina. Feeling limited by the lack of Christ-centeredness in traditional therapies, I became certified in Biblical counseling through "The Institute for Biblical Counseling & Discipleship."
I have various certifications and licensures to administer therapy for trauma's such as Trauma-Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy(TF-CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and the Positive Parenting Program (Triple P). I carefully use some of these therapies being mindful that often secular therapies contradict our biblical beliefs.
For individuals struggling with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), I have found EMDR therapy to be a superior evidence-based treatment that diminishes or eliminates the emotional charge of the trauma. It is possible to guide individuals through this therapy while keeping the focus on Christ and biblical concepts. EMDR is different from traditional talk therapies. Please see the video below for more on EMDR therapy.
Check out this video by EMDRIA explaining the effectiveness of EMDR for treating PTSD.

What does the Bible say about how to handle recurrent disturbing thoughts from life experiences? How do you draw near to God when your life has fallen apart and feel alone with the outcomes? As believers in God and the Bible, we all need Godly counsel from other believers when we are down in the valley and cannot make sense of the situations around us. Biblical counseling can provide that clear voice that helps echo God's promises and Biblical instructions during this difficult season of your life.
"All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work."
2 Timothy 3:16-17

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I hold a clinical license to treat individuals with "mental health problems". However, in my journey to understand Biblical concepts and my studies into Biblical counseling I have learned that many of the training's and certifications I have in psychotherapies are contrary to how the Bible says we are to view and treat our emotional difficulties. I believe God has purpose in my learning and understanding how secular therapies work and how as Christians, Biblical counseling should be applied.
"Traumatic" means an experience or trial you have been through that has been emotionally difficult to deal with such as domestic violence, sexual abuse, witnessing traumatic events, divorce, physical or verbal abuse, death, school violence, unstable living situations, homelessness and any other event that has been difficult for you to cope with.
These experiences can cause you to feel anxious, depressed, jumpy, have nightmares, be avoidant from God and others, have flashbacks, and have recurring memories of the trauma when you come into contact with things that remind you of the trial.

My ideal client is someone who has experienced a specific traumatic event that they cannot seem to get past. I also do grief and loss counseling.
Talking to a stranger (me!) about traumatic events can be a deeply personal experience. Take comfort that as believers in God and the bible, we are sisters in Christ!
This is a judgement-free zone!
"Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?" (Matthew 7:3) "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Honey I've got logs as big as sequoias so you won't find me picking out your specks!
Thank you for trusting me to help you on this journey.
Someone once told me that finding the right counselor is like finding the perfect pair of jeans. You might try on five pairs of jeans all the same size, but they are all going to fit a little differently!
I hope you find your perfect fit.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME......
I have been a social worker for over twenty years serving others in long-term care settings, working as a family therapist in people's homes, and currently serving in a private practice setting. When I was 17 years old, I read an article in the local newspaper about a woman in a nursing home that had been sexually abused. At the young age of 17 I remember telling my parents that I didn't know things like that happened in the world. I decided then and there that I was going to work with older adults and do everything I could to make sure that never happened where I worked. I accomplished that goal for the first half of my career. God has now moved me to helping people heal from those kinds of tragedies.
In 2010 I became a Christian after going through a very painful divorce. I am now remarried and living the blended family life. A North Carolina native, I enjoy the beaches and the mountains in our fine state. I love going to state parks and am working my way through visiting all 41 of them in our state. Gardening is part of my self-care as well as crocheting, puzzles, jamming out to Christian music (if you pass by me in my car you will most likely see me singing to the top of my lungs like I'm at a concert), walking my dogs, and fellowshipping with friends.
